How Can Subsea ROVs Help in Ocean Exploration?

May 2025

Oceans are the largest living space on our planet, and 95% of that space is undiscovered. Underwater ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) play an important role in understanding the ocean and underwater life.

At Buccaneer Marine, we specialise in these incredible machines that help professionals and enthusiasts alike to explore ocean depths without getting wet. From scientific research to infrastructure inspection, ROVs are transforming how we interact with the oceans.

4 Ways ROVs are Used Underwater

  • Underwater Filming and Photography: With high-definition cameras, ROVs capture stunning visuals of the underwater world for documentaries, scientific records and media production.
  • Infrastructure inspections: ROVs help inspect underwater structures like bridges, dams, pipelines and oil and gas platform and wind turbine foundations. Their ability to reach deep and hazardous areas makes them invaluable for ensuring structural integrity.
  • Marine Research: Scientists use ROVs to study marine ecosystems, observe wildlife behaviour, and collect environmental data without disturbing the natural habitat.
  • Search and Recovery: ROVs assist in search and recovery operations by locating and retrieving objects or conducting search missions in deep waters where divers cannot safely reach.

Recent Underwater Explorations Using ROVs

The versatility of ROVs has expanded significantly in recent years, finding applications beyond traditional marine research. For instance, Devon and Cornwall Police Service here in the UK have invested in an advanced ROV equipped with high-resolution sonar and a twin-axis mechanical arm to enhance underwater search and rescue operations. This initiative aims to improve safety and efficiency in challenging environments such as flooded quarries, enhancing results and reducing the risks associated with diver-based rescues, while reducing operational costs and increasing safety.

When it comes to the scientific side of things, the University of South Florida's Florida Institute of Oceanography has introduced "ROV Taurus," a state-of-the-art vehicle capable of diving up to 2.5 miles deep. This ROV not only advances our understanding of deep-sea environments but also serves as an educational tool, providing students with hands-on experience in marine science and technology.

These developments underscore the evolving role of ROVs in various sectors, from emergency response to education, highlighting their growing importance in underwater exploration and operations.

Features of ROVs

  • Most ROVs are equipped with at least two to four HD cameras – typically mounted on the front, top or sides of the vehicle. These cameras are used for navigation, real-time video monitoring and recording underwater footage. Some ROVs also include tilt and pan functionality or low-light capabilities for deep-sea environments.
  • Precise manipulators are robotic arms attached to the ROV that allow operators to interact with objects underwater. Manipulators can grip, cut, sample, or perform delicate tasks like turning valves or retrieving marine specimens, making them crucial in both industrial and research applications.
  • ROVs use a combination of spatial, acoustic and environmental sensors. These may include sonar systems for mapping terrain, depth sensors, temperature and salinity gauges, and even Doppler velocity logs (DVLs) for tracking movement. The data collected is transmitted through the ROV’s tether in real time to the surface control unit, available to be analysed by operators.

These tools are essential for industries like marine biology, underwater archaeology and offshore construction, providing a safe and efficient way to conduct underwater operations.

Not only do we offer a wide selection of ROVs from leading brands like Blue Robotics and Outland and our expert team is also on hand to guide you through the selection process. We will ensure that you find the perfect ROV that fits your requirements and budget.
