Do you have everything you need for the boating season?

May 2025

Spring is here! Finally, the days are longer, and the boating season is upon us. You tucked your boat safely away in storage during winter, after doing all the necessary maintenance.
So, it should be easy to get it back in the water, right?

Not really!

Even the most well-maintained vessels can encounter major issues if they’re released back into the water without doing proper seasonal checks and maintenance. This guide will walk you through the vital steps of prepping your boat, from safety protocols to maintenance checks, so that you can sail smoothly through the season.

Preparation Guide for Boating Season

Safety gear check

  • Start by inspecting your life jackets to ensure they are in good condition and that there are enough for all passengers. A life jacket in good condition should have no rips, tears or punctures, the straps and buckles should be secure and undamaged, and it should hold pressure properly when tested.
  • Check your onboard fire extinguishers, flares and first aid kits to ensure they are within expiration dates and fully stocked.

Navigation and Communication Tools

  • Make sure your GPS and sonar systems are up to date with the latest charts and software updates.
  • Check your VHF radio and other communication devices for proper operation.
  • Test all on-board lighting including navigation lights, cabin lights and any indicator panels. Replace any faulty bulbs or repair connections that are not functioning properly.

Electrical Checks

  • Ensure your batteries are fully charged and hold a charge well.
  • Check for any signs of corrosion on terminals and clean them as necessary.
  • Look for frayed wires or loose connections and secure or replace them as needed.
  • Consider testing or replacing batteries that are more than a few years old to avoid unexpected failures.

Boat Maintenance Checks

  • Begin with a thorough cleaning to remove any algae or barnacles that could affect your boat’s performance. Anti- foul as required but not to early before launching!
  • Inspect the hull for any signs of wear or damage and make necessary repairs.
  • Check your engine’s oil level, cooling system and fuel system for any potential issues.

Preparing for the Weather

  • For those in cooler climates, make sure your heating systems are functional and that your boat is equipped with necessary ‘winterisation’ features. This includes installing engine block heaters or marine antifreeze systems to prevent freezing damage during early or late-season outings.
  • In warmer areas, adequate shade and hydration systems are essential to keep you and your crew comfortable. Consider adding a Bimini top or T-top for shade, and make sure your freshwater systems are working properly to provide cool drinking water throughout your trip.

Turn your Boating Experience from Good to Great

Use this checklist as a starting point for your seasonal preparation and, remember, the goal is not just to meet safety standards but to ensure comfort and fun on the water. The thrill of boating is unmatched, being well prepared means you can fully enjoy your time out on the water.
